Celebrate Black History Month with us

At Healthy Living Platform we love to celebrate the diversity in our community through our various food programmes, and we know that communal cooking (and eating!) is a great way of sharing and bringing cultures alive.

Black history month in October is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the different Black cultures and history reflected in our communities. During an online community planning meeting we agreed to celebrate the following ways, through our food projects:

Launch event of our Healthy Living Kitchen on 22nd September  - here we provided food from different cultures, with a particular focus on Black cultures. Our food ambassadors made a Caribbean pumpkin curry, callaloo and joloff rice. We also had on display a recipe kit of the Caribbean curry

Cultural cook-alongs at Loughborough children's centre  every Wednesday in October, 10.30am-1pm (booking required). These will be open to everyone in the community from all backgrounds.  Different people in our community from Black cultures and heritage will take it in turns to lead these sessions – you will get to hear and share different Black Cultures and recipes and cuisines from these culture.

Our recipe kits - Cara's Caribbean pumpkin and chickpea curry recipe kit - this includes all the ingredients and the recipe card, which will be available at our pantries for 1 week in October and also at one of our cook-alongs

Cooking at Moorlands pantry  We have recently started a volunteer led meal service as part of the pantry offering at Moorlands pantry (suggested voluntary donation of £1). For October, our volunteers from Black cultures will be leading the cooking and sharing their favourite cultural foods. Open to everyone, no need to book, just turn up!

Please contact Zoe on 07944 240420 if you are from a Black culture and have a dish you would like to share at any of the above sessions.
