Event catering

We were over the moon when our Community Food Coordinator, Zoe got asked to cater for a birthday party on a barge for Kath Dalmeny, CEO of Sustain (https://www.sustainweb.org/). Sustain are a leading charity whose ethos are very much in line with our own. They run a range of different projects and campaigns aiming to improve food and farming, such as ‘Right to food’, ‘Campaign for Better Hospital Food’ and ‘Better Food for Britain’. They also run the London Food Link, which is the umbrella for all Sustain’s initiatives in London. The party was held on the Electric Barge (https://www.theelectricbarge.co.uk), a social enterprise that provides practical educational activities for local children and families.

Since there were no cooking facilities on the barge, we provided a buffet of vibrant colourful salads, which included broccoli, kale and tahini salad, Asian lime, sesame and peanut slaw, curried cauliflower, chickpea and butternut squash salad, Moroccan roasted veg with giant couscous, kale and pumpkin seed pesto potato salad, beetroot and butterbean hummus and courgette babaganoush. In light of Sustain’s ‘sugar smart campaign’ (https://www.sugarsmartuk.org), and given our own healthy eating policy, we felt it only right to show off our tasty sugar free date and ginger cake and raw chocolate brownies. All the food was vegan.

We were keen to try to source everything as sustainably as possible, using local farmers markets and Farmdrop.

One of our key objectives is to empower people within our communities and so this event was a great opportunity to provide employment to some of our Food Ambassadors – who are local volunteers we have trained to cook community meals.

Following the event, Kath said, ‘The food was absolutely stunning, everyone LOVED it, it really made the party extra special – and so good to be able to make my vegan and vegetarian friends feel so welcome (not just an afterthought).
